Re: Re Twitter

Yeah, I added some testing options to the main menu so you can walk around in quite a few places now. You can check out the equipment stores, Mage's Guilds, taverns, etc., and all of the main quest dungeons. No entities or objects yet though (just voxel data), and transitions between levels don't wo...

Re: Re Twitter

I can relate with Interkarma here. There's a fine line between something being a hobby project and something feeling like an obligation, especially when there are hundreds or thousands of people patiently watching from the sidelines. It can be tiring to be a focus of attention for so long, and you o...

Re: I interviewed Julian LeFay last week

Very interesting news. I imagine Julian would like to hear about my open-source project for Arena. I remember seeing him show some interest in DaggerXL a few years ago. As far as I know, Arena's source code hasn't been lost yet (though it's probably pretty scary C89 and assembly code).

Arena's engine also used in Terminator: Rampage

I discovered Terminator: Rampage a couple months ago. It's one of Bethesda's games that came out before Arena. Honestly, it's kind of a hard game to watch. It looks like it runs at 15 FPS? Maybe it was good at the time? Anyway, I brought this game up since its engine seems to have a lot in common wi...

Re: OpenTESArena 0.5.0 Video

I'm aiming for releases about every 4 months, so maybe expect the next one around the middle of December or early January. You can always compile the code yourself if you want to try it out anytime (although I would only recommend this for people familiar with programming). I added diagonal wall ren...

OpenTESArena 0.5.0 Video

I made a new release today for my open-source Arena engine. Some of the changes include sound support (.VOC files), more weapon animations, and a day/night cycle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw6DMbuJ6ZA I also created my first Twitter account today (@aaron_fritz1), and I'll be using that for pro...

Re: Alpha to Coverage

Anti-aliasing is a fascinating topic. I've seen alpha-to-coverage used in a couple games, like Arma 2 and 3. My favorite technique comes from a book called "Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice". It's done in a ray tracing context, and it involves subdividing a pixel only when some i...

OpenTESArena Interview with Zhakaron

Zaric Zhakaron and I had a dev discussion about my Arena project yesterday. I think it went really well! Daggerfall Unity was mentioned around the 11:40 mark.

Re: Vulkan Rendering with Unity

Good to know. I haven't been using modern Unity for very long so I'm not completely up to speed with the bugs and workarounds yet. I just thought I'd mention Vulkan since it's a very interesting path to take for rendering, and most of the work is done for you by Unity :). I've only done about a quar...

Vulkan Rendering with Unity

With the release of Unity 5.6, Vulkan was added as another rendering API for Unity. This can significantly improve rendering performance because Vulkan was designed with zero driver overhead in mind and can make certain optimizations that older APIs cannot. As far as I know, you just add Vulkan to t...
