Bards Guild Quests

Post by imsobadatnicknames »

This is a little questpack that lets you join the Society of the Performance Arts, who identify themselves as the biggest bard troupe in the Iliac Bay.

I eventually want to turn this into a full guild mod with its own guildhall, faction, ranks, benefits etc, when I figure out world data overrides and everything else I need to mod in a guild, but for the moment it's all handled through a questpack, like the carthographers guild quests from QP1.

The startup of this questpack plays out in a similar way to my Perform At Taverns mod (and I guess I should probably merge them lol): Once you get the initial quest (BG0) Running, you'll occassionally be offered the opportunity to perform to entertain people in taverns. However, once you get an Amazing performance (identified by the "you get a standing ovation" message), a few days later you'll receive a letter from a member of the guild offering you the chance to join. If you accept, you'll be given a magical talisman which, when used inside a city, will reveal to you the name and location of a member of the guild who will offer you a quest (this is just a temporary solution until I give the guild an actual guildhall).

Right now the quests include:

BGQ1: Perform as a jester at a local noble's birthday party (Success depends on a Personality attribute check)
BGQ2: Help the owner of a library attract more clients by doing a live reading of a book (Personality attribute check)
BGQ3: Sing at a tavern to entertain a squad of orcs (Orcish skill check)
BGQ4: Help a noble write a speech (Etiquette skill check)
BGQ5: Perform at a teather play (Randomly picks between an Etiquette or Streetwise skill check)
BGQ6: Help a guildmate who's supposed to go to a rehearsal find a lost script (this doesn't include any skill/attribute checks, it's just a fetch quest)

I'm open to ideas for more quests, and for ideas for benefits, services and things like that for when I eventually turn the guild into an actual faction.

Installation:

Unzip the file inside StreamingAssets/Questpacks. If you're going to use it in an existing save game, you'll have to manually start the questpack by opening up the console and typing "startquest BG0" (or "startquest BG2" if you don't want to skip right to the part where you are asked to join the guild)

EDIT: Had to release a fix bc I realized I made a mistake in the code that made the BG0 and BG1 quests start multiplying indefinitely. It should be better now.

Cool, I like this idea a lot.

I may actually have some quest ideas, should I post them here or would you prefer a PM (to avoid spoiler to the future players in case you would like to implement them)?

Up to you. If you feel like your quest ideas would be ruined by getting spoiled, feel free to shoot me a PM, otherwise you can post them here :p I'm fine with it either way!

So, here are my first suggestions:

The sick actor: you are asked to replaced a sick actor who cannot go on stage. The questor gives you a parchment (the script you have to learn) and the indication about the location and the day you should perform (like a tavern or a Palace in the region). Using the script triggers an attempt to learn it (the time advances of some hours and you have to pass an INT check). The challenge is to arrive at the destination in time with the script learnt

The tournée: you have to lead a company of three actors in a tournée which will cover three or four places in the region. You have to reach each destination in time, and your final reward will depend by how good your performance was in each location. Obiouvsly issues may occour on the road (if you don't use fast travel)

This one is very similar to BGQ5. I didn't want to reveal many details about it but the "plot" of that quest is that you have to perform in a play as a last-minute repalcement because one of the actors got injured. However, I do like the idea that memorizing the script should be an INT check, so I miiight end up changing the Etiquette/Streetwise check to an INT check

The idea for the tournée quest is really cool. Maybe instead of telling you three specific places to perform at, the quest could let you plan out the route (e.g, you could be told "you have to perform at a shrine, a temple, and a village and be back here in two weeks") and which shrine, temple and village you decide to perform at is up to you to decide. Maybe there's a specific ammount of money you need to raise with your three performances, and if you fail to raise it you need to pay the remainder out of pocket.

Or, if you wish of course, you can implement the tournée quest in both versions, so you can add more variety to your quest pack :)

Question: would you be interested also in proposals which involve combat or dungeon crawling? In case I don't mind sharing, as I'm not planning to develop them

Sure. As long as there's a reasonable justification to explain why the bards guild would send one of their members to a dungeon or to fight a monster, I don't mind having quests that involve combat or dungeon-crawling.

i posted this on Nexus but ill post here too. I think Personality, Intelligence, Agility and to a lesser extent Endurance and Willpower (in that order) are important skills. Luck i think has a role but maybe as a last check to determine if they will forgive a slightly poor performance or dislike an okay performance but i think reputation would have more impact on that.

Some ideas:

Add instruments to carry around. The more you have or if you have the right one will give you a bonus for that performance. Maybe orcs like drums so having drums during your performance would aid you.
-
You can find pieces of music/scripts (recipes or books) that open new songs/pieces to perform. These would give more money or prestige.
-
The guild can hire out its bravest members to go with an adventurer to a dungeon as a pacifier. (not sure how this works but maybe a skill check with no actual dungeoning.) or you can hire a bard and they will actively pacify in the dungeon or you activate them. This could combine nicely with low level or archaeologists guild members. This could also be where you need to procure certain items for performances: mummy wrapping for halloween, nymph hair for a romance story.
-
If you carry certain items they can be used during a performance like a prop in a comedy show; or as an aid in a drama performance. (a deadra heart in a performance about tearing a heart out - for instance)
-
What you wear is of importance. People wont laugh at someone in full plate armour with a daedric sword. But in a goofy shirt and pants, they will. If you are playing a knight however, blue jeans breaks the illusion. (very high illusion/personality skill negates this?)
-
Maybe an impersonation quest. The thieves guild wants you to throw someone off their trail so you pose as a suspicious character; items and clothing have an effect (negative rep for large reward)
-
Performing for the guards could improve reputation.
-
Perform on holidays for big boosts. Must have instruments, items and clothes to get best reward (high standing in the region, discounts)
-
Perform magic tricks, this is basically just a straight illusion check. Doing this first will make people more receptive to performance, its like an ice breaker.
-
Escorting troupes from town to town can be an internal and external quest. Either you are a member and escort a troupe or the quest is given to you when in a tavern/wilderness. This could have a similar effect as the dungeon diving quest where they will pacify enemies.
-
A high level quest would be to perform/provide services to elites. Either that is perform for them specifically or to calm the public. You have to perform at a few taverns in the city and be successful. This would require relevant instruments in good condition, items that aid the performance, proper clothing for the role and high illusion skill. (personality and speech skills are part of all of this i would think.)

or once you reach a high level, playing music will give you a stat boost like a potion. differnet songs for different effects. A calming song for passive boosts and a heavy song for combat aid
-

Types of rewards could be: monetary, item, instrument, clothes, reputation, discounts, remove rep loss in other guilds for that month?, safer travel as fewer groups would attack you(bandits hear that you shred the lute), monthly allowance(basically a paycheque).

Anyway those are some ideas for now

So BG0 appears to be starting and running ridiculous numbers of times - most of the quests in my quest debugger are just hundreds of endless copies of BG0, marked as Finished (success) but never running out. Probably related, but every time I enter and attempt to rest in an inn I get 5-6 Do You Want To Perform requests every hour, sometimes overlapping each other so I have to click multiple Yes answers to get back to resting and trigger the Do You Want To Sing dialogue box... which also has multiple overlapping windows, that seem to just keep multiplying, making it impossible to rest in taverns anymore. The ridiculous number of running quests is also makng my game lag like hell.

EDIT: And by Ridiculous, I mean in my quest debugger running quests 8 through 810 are all copies of BG0
