How do you guys set up your keybindings?

Post by Ralzar »

I've noticed a lot of streamers are stilll just using the factory defaults for key bindings, which is honestly kind of terrible. Does anyone else rebind most keys during play?

I always bind them around WSAD and mouse like this:

Crouch: Lctrl
Spellbook: TAB
Use Magic Item: F
Character Sheet: Z
Inventory: X
Status: C
Interaction modes: 1-4

Ready Weapon: Click mouse scroll-wheel.
Change weapon: Third mouse button.

This allows me to reach all important functions without having to move my hand around on the keyboard.

I use a controller ;)

But before that, I was using an ambidextrous gaming keypad as a lefty gamer. This was my setup:

- E to interact
- Q to abort spell
- C for switch hand
- Left click to attack
- Right click to cast spell
- Middle click to recast spell
- Side mouse button for using magic item
- F to run
- shift to crouch
- 1 status, 2 character sheet, 3 inventory, 4 notebook, 5 automap, 6 travel map

Oftentimes in games I can just tweak a few things for the keypad, and leave the rest on the regular keyboard if it's not essential for me to quickly use (like opening a map or character sheet).

Well the keypad has the F1-F6 buttons. If I'm using a controller I'll just use my keyboard, but it actually is something I'm looking forward to resolving in the future once I get other input features into later releases.

:-) Left hand on the right side of the keybaord, mostly over the keypad, right hand on the mouse. Needless to say, I suck at FPSs.

I'm using the same layout I used for classic, which was itself influenced by FPS gaming; Minimally, as I only regrouped commands that I need in combat, where speed matters. Having other commands further away can actually prevent mistakes.
Also I should mention that I'm playing with classic right-click drag weapon control, and activate objects with left-click, so it turns out Daggerfall Unity defaults are not very different from what I used already.
I disable Mouse smoothing though (yuck! Who needs added latency?)

Using an azerty keyboard, I changed WASD to ZQSD (same layout).
I moved Sneak key to Left Ctrl, which is easier to reach with the pinky than Left Alt on my keyboard (and, I find "Shift" and "Control" terms appropriate for those functions).
I moved Ready weapon and Switch weapon to A and E respectively, in the top corners of movement cross. Had to move abort spell, that I seldom use, from E to X.
Then obviously I moved Cast spell from the very remote Backspace to F. I moved Recast spell from Q to V, consistently next to F. In turn I had to move World travel map from V to P, next to default M/Map.
And... that's it.

If I had to change one default, that would be Backspace for opening the spellbook, even if it matches classic it's objectively awkward. That's a large key, but still. The rest is just personal preferences.
