I just realized that editing posts does not change the post date. While this makes sense to a certain degree, it does force you into making new posts if you want everybody to know that there is something new...
Is it possible to make an edit post action change the last post date?
Or would that be a bad idea?

Re: Is it possible to make edit post change the last post da
This is fairly standard forum behaviour. The solution is to modify your post then bump the thread with an "updated post" reply. But it's probably easier just to a post a reply with all the new information (in addition to editing your first post if that's the thread topic and first thing new readers will see). If you have a large amount of new information that no longer applies to old thread, simply create a new one.
Active threads will rise to the top and everything else slowly sinks away. If you feel something is really important, you (as a mod) have the power to make it a sticky so the thread stays at the top.
