More resolutions for Retro Mode please?

Post by King of Worms »

Hi,

is it possible to add more resolutions to retro mode?

Id like to see 800x600 and 1024*768 as well. It doesnt have to be only the super low 320x200 and semi-usable 640x400 (which I actually like)

It would be a good addition for DREAM 90s. It looks really nice at 640x400 but Id really love to see the other 2 mentioned resolutions, which are oldskool as well.

Please :) 960×720 would also fit... all are the old 4:3 resolutions. And they were possible at those times... I remember trying Tomb Raider 2 (1997) at 1600*1200 slideshow back in the day. So up to 1024x768 is still quite reasonable for the time period.

I could add those modes to the retro-frame mod if you want.

That would be very cool. But I dont think I want it tied to that HUD (eventho I like it a lot)
Is it possible to just have the resolutions and enable/disable the hud and the 4:3 aspect correction?

I'll see if I can make the changes and submit a PR.
What modes would you want exactly?

Wouldn't it make more sense to have higher 16:10 resolutions that people would apply a 4:3 / 16:9 aspect ratio fix on? The point of retro mode is to match the original resolution

Hi :)

Currently we have 320x200 & 640x400 in retro mode. So I thought adding 800x600 & 1024x768 would be a reasonable upgrade to that.

I think a Retro mode is used in various ways.
I personally dont use the aspect fix part for example. I want my 16:10 monitor to render full-screen, with no black borders.

Im also not trying to match the original resolution - what I want from Retro mode is, to be able have a lower resolution than my native. If I select for example 640x480 or 1024x768 in a current DFU (no retro mode) I get automatic aspect correction. So black borders at the side. Thats not the case with retro mode, where I can select any of the 2 resolutions, and I get full-screen coverage.

So the thing I would like to see is, to have retro mode with these 2 more new resolutions, so I can play in that resolution without a aspect correction.

If you think, adding even higher 16:10 resolutions is a good idea, than by all means!
1280×960
1600×1200
come to my mind.

Above that, we get to HD territory.

Hope I did not misunderstood your comment

So you're primarily interested in achieving a certain 'pixelation' effect?
In that case, would it be better to invent a custom mode rather than use the historical modes that were designed for 4:3?

yes, exactly

Im not sure what you mean with custom mode?

I know that when I use retro mode 640x400 it looks good and covers my whole screen. And I just wanted same functionality with a bit higher resolutions as a option. Thats why my idea was, to increase the variation of Retro mode resolutions.

Because the standard resolutions in DFU dont work the same way as a retro mode, they keep the original aspect ratio aka produce black bars on the screen. Thats why I think custom resolutions will produce same effect, with letterboxing. Only retro mode renders fullscreen without aspect correction and thats what Im looking for. Lower resolutions but WITHOUT letterboxing.

So for example you could have a 960x540 mode for 16:9 screens. The pixels would be exactly 4 times bigger than 1920x1080 mode. Then a 840x525 mode for 16:10 displays, where the pixels are 4 times bigger than 1680x1050 mode., or 960x600 etc.
