I agree with your middle-ground approach. Above all else, a finished game may attract many pairs of hands, and allow the best of both worlds.

Interkarma, I don't suppose you know what the technical term is when the lightest pixels in an image are lit earlier than the darkest? As in, the image doesn't brighten or darken in a uniform fashion, but sort of pops in a pleasing manner, like messing with the Levels tool in Photoshop. Sorry that I...

Whew... imagine a "no fast travel challenge" of the main quest. Might as well force Rest to happen in real-time while you're at it. :)

(Okay, sleeping is effectively a real world time skip, but the game assumes you're still awake long enough to do things like Medical)

I was impressed that the far terrain appears to retain a lot of fine geographical detail even at vast distances - something I haven't seen in other terrain implementations. Will be very grateful to see this improved. The game is going to feel so much better when all music is playing properly.

Are there any music tracks in vanilla Daggerfall that loop from a different point than the beginning? And does DFU already have the functionality to handle that?

After noticing it in the latest build, I went back and reproduced it on loot piles as far back as Windows build #64 (because that's the earliest version I have installed) but it might have required holding down the left-click a fraction of a second longer - enough for me to never notice in the past ...

I've found I have to be very quick releasing the mouse when clicking "exit" in dialogue and loot windows these days, or else the game will re-open the interface I just left. For some reason this little annoyance has happened a lot more often in recent builds, even though (after checking older builds...
