Re: AI Upscaled Textures

In the meantime I expanded upon the xBR/xBRZ multipass method I described earlier. As the up- and downscaling iterations resulted in blurring, I tried to counter that with sharpening the source image prior to scaling it with xBR(Z). This produced pretty decent results. I also came to the conclusion ...

Re: Daggerfall Spiritual Successor Project (Artists Needed!)

This is excellent news, and I wish you guys best of luck with this project! I've been working on something really similar to a Daggerfall spiritual successor for 2-3 months. I'm mainly a programmer, but I took the role of designer and even started doing my own 3D assets for the game. I'm starting to...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

My thoughts about how the xBR(Z) upscale affected the neural upscale result prompted me to test pre-processing with several passes of xBR. That is, upscale image once with xBR(Z), then scale down to the original resolution (this time I used Sinc instead of Bicubic because it produces less ringing as...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

In all honesty, it was neither quick nor easy to get these results and they look fugly. This AI is probably best for modifying small parts of photos of real people. Not so much for fully upscaling tiny resolution hand drawn portraits. Still plenty neat. Thanks for trying this out! To be honest, whe...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

Here is the result of your sprites composited with Gigapixel results: Interesting! Gigapixel seems to produce less cartoonish faces overall. I suspect it does have a semantic level somewhere inside which tries to identify parts of the image and then enhance them accordingly. But I cannot be certain...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

Besides the xBRZ upscaling part, are you able to batch this process? If not, once you're happy with your results, document precisely what the steps and parameters for each step are and I will batch them all collectively. Honestly I've never given a thought about batching. When I was still using wai...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

After further testing I realised that using xBRZ, after all, produced better results at sprite edges:

(compare with the same group in the above post)

Additionally the resulting upscales are for some reason a bit sharper if xBRZ is used instead of xBR.

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

I processed a few more of the small NPC flats, surprisingly these produce somewhat better results regarding their faces: https://i.imgur.com/gw640QX.png This was done with the scaling up with Sinc and back down with Bicubic before applying antialias as described above. I also gave a go at some mediu...

Re: AI Upscaled Textures

Upscaled a sample of actor sprites against the blue background similar to the addendum of the previous post: https://i.imgur.com/kEhmo6F.png I'm now inclined to think that adding noise does not really improve the results, so I skipped this step. Additionally I tried making the contrasts in the proce...
