It seems like graphics mods have really grown root.

It's flexible, easy to use, massive asset store, C# and Java for scripting means there's two massive pools of pre-existing developers, it gets regular updates, and it's *always had a free version. And, the $35 USD/month version is not bad.

Is it possible to replace sprites with 3d meshes in this mod and add LODs to them?

Yes that is possible, not sure about LODs though. :)

LOD is implemented in unity using a LOD Group. For any other questions on this topic please write here ;)

Does this one have the desert plants around ponds in desert terrain ?
I seem to be missing them in my game now.

Some tests adding occasional vegetation on the ground. May help to make forests look a bit more dense.
