So I'm visiting one of the lyceums in Penbrugh, and I talk to the NPC inside. The NPC tells me they're a member of "unknown-guild" and are happy to assist.
What is this mysterious "unknown-guild" and how can I join?

Penbrugh, Daggerfall?
I could only find Lady Uthyrick's Lyceum there, and one guy inside that I can talk to (no guild options)...

Could you provide your DFU version and a save game and/or player log of the incident?

No idea how to do that, but it IS the most recent version of DFU. Hold on while I grab a screenshot.
EDIT: Here we go.
This is one isntance of him using this line as greeting text.

Re: "I am a member of unknown-guild"
Are you using DFU on Windows, Mac, or Linux? Each places the player log in a different place:
Windows
Your output_log.txt file will be in the Daggerall Unity_Data folder of your unzipped Daggerfall Unity game.
Linux
Your Player.log file will be in your persistent data path folder.
For example: /home/username/.config/unity3d/Daggerfall Workshop/Daggerfall Unity/Player.log
Mac
Your Player.log file will be in the following path.
/Users/Username/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log
If you can put it into a zip file and upload it, or put it on somewhere like pastebin.com, that'll make finding this problem much easier. Also, were you using any mods?

Re: "I am a member of unknown-guild"
Here's my output log. And yeah, I'm using four mods:
Enhanced Sky
Mountains and Hills
Birds in Daggerfall
Loading Screens
EDIT: I just tried it without mods. Happens without them as well.

Re: "I am a member of unknown-guild"
I've been able to reproduce this as well. Here's a save game to repro. Just keep talking to shop keeper until he gives you the "unknown-guild" message.
I don't recall shop keepers mentioning guild affiliations, and I haven't been able to get this dialog output in classic yet. Admittedly, I haven't spent much time trying yet.
No errors in event log after reproducing.
