I don't want to just walk around in the wilderness, are these in some kind of places where you might go somewhat naturally or do you have to just bumble around the map like a blind man?

They are in a places you can find, not in the middle of the desert.. well maybe they also are in the middle of the desert, but I have not found em there naturally, but I for sure have found em in a places players have a chance to visit.

Found an issue with a shard placed in a cemetery: the light and sound effects were present, but not the shards themselves. Had to quicksave/quickreload to fix the issue.
That looks like a loading order/placement issue again. I'm using the development version of DFU, and arrived to the place using Travel Options mod, using 5x accelerated travel, in case it matters for those.

It would be cool if you could seek them out.

You contact a priest in a holy place who gives you a riddle like description of its location.

How about just generating a random object or actor to appear under the shard, in the light-beam?

That small bit of code-change would seem to make a big difference to me.

as a "feature"for immersion purposes especially.

Something like this ^, at very least I would think could be a big improvement...
adding a thing that they mark and/or highlight, for example... something a bit more... 'realistic', immersive, and/or lore-friendly perhaps :)
Like;
+ a skillbook, bookshelf, cottage with hermit/sage who tells you some quote from one of the skillbooks, library or some other information-technology-related 'thing' (signpost, billboard, wanted poster, 'lost treasure-style' old map, personal correspondence/letter, random scroll etc.)
+ a shamanic figure [of any species] which casts a permanent blessing (affecting you your 'shard-reward') on you, then uses teleport to vanish
+ a Loot node/bag/cache/container (... hmm, maybe some loot should always be included? a few gold, at minimum?) to increase motivation to seek.
+ just about anything that actually belongs in the T.E.S. world... other than a big, strangely glowing, floating blue gemstone that looks like it was plucked from any number of console game/game systems, as opposed to being from the list of objects & actors found in a T.E.S. game,
with a big empty glowing field of blue light underneath the cut jewel. :mrgreen:

Noticing the inconsistencies in shard's locations, wondering whether they're there or if they're bugged, I decided to take a monumental task of scouting every single coordinate as per mod's code upon myself.

And, I can tell that most of those that do not spawn even after reloading at the correct spot seem to appear either way above the ground or underground before promptly disappearing (I could see the glimpse of the beam right after the reload). Additionally, you can't see the ray or the object if you're a few map blocks away, which is somewhat concerning. If the mod author ever comes back, I hope these locations will be fixed. Although I did my best to search around, I might've missed them by chance or because of some mod conflict, I can't be sure.

My feedback about the spots: some of them are placed at main quest locations, you just can't miss 'em. Some are placed at significant places, at scenic spots, capitals/big cities or sometimes at covens. But most of them are at small towns/shrines/temples/dungeons/cemeteries, and I don't think you'll ever encounter them unless by pure chance while doing random quests, or fast travelling with Tedious Travel/Travel Options. I guess it's fine, as you're not meant to find them all, but a quest/locator pointing at the right spot would be a very welcome addition indeed. Initially I went to check the wiki for significant spots of interest, but it proved to be such a crapshoot I nearly gave up immediately.

Thanks to billyloist for his list, it started me down the rabbit hole of trying to get them all.

Eventually I looked at the scripts when was I still missing a few and think I have some conclusions.

It looks like all but four are findable if you TCL and look underground.
Two shards share the same X/Y World Coordinates, so I think the second shard never gets spawned.
