Possessed Child temple quest

There are other threads talking about issues with this quest. What I did in order was,
1. Talk to the child's guardian.
2. Talk to the child.
3. Meet the exorcist.
4. Bring the item to the child.
So, the child disappeared after that, and no daedra appeared, and the quest didn't advance in the logbook and the temple quest giver doesn't speak to me.

Well, if I remember correctly that quest has several possible endings.
Seems this time you experienced one of the "scam" endings: the item has been stolen from you, and now you have to find the way to get it back.

I don't remember who you have to question, the guardian maybe? Time to investigate

Try searching around the house again. The daedra may have appeared a bit late.

You've almost certainly got the scam version of the quest. If you really can't work out what to do next there are complete spoiler write-ups on both UESP and the Wiki.
