Skyrim is sort of the gold standard (for me) in terms of portability due to its popularity, and on my recent attempt to run it in WINE (rated platinum), it literally made my computer shut down (actually opening the shutdown menu and forcing it to turn off during gameplay!!). It happened twice, and on both reboots the computer started running fsck and complaining about orphaned sectors... and I decided it was a bit too risky to keep trying it

 That's never happened to me. I tried Skyrim with WINE, and it didn't work because of the Steam DRM, but it didn't do anything like shut my computer down! It works fine for me through Steam and Proton.

You probably don't want to try again if something like that happened...

...but if it gives you any ideas for what went wrong, some shots in the dark:

Drivers are out of date.
Open source Nvidia drivers installed.
There was no DirectX redistributable installed.
PSU issues.
Outdated WINE / OS version.
Weird WINE config. (overides?)

Overall, I've had pretty good luck, most of the games I want to play work perfectly (although possibly with a slight performance hit). I've had worse luck with WINE than with Proton, which you can also use with non-Steam games FYI.

EDIT: Sorry about de-railing the previous topic, that was definitely my fault.

No it wasn't. It was mine, and I claim it  Besides, now we have something else to talk about! And your suggestions have been helpful; I've misunderstood Proton and its capabilities. Something to look into more in depth now.
