Dyslexia Font

Post by VMblast »

This is somewhat idea for a very practical MOD. As someone who is grappling with this every time I have to read some text, this would makes easier for everyone who has this kind of problem, as Daggerfall is text heavy (text based) game. There are some specialized fonts for this kind of issue and they greatly help. Im think adding this as a MOD wouldnt be that difficult -adding check box in main menu and replacing game`s default font with Specialized Fonts for dyslexia. ;)

PS -I would just add, regardless of this issue, that the font itself is really pretty, soft and pleasing to the eye. :)

interesting read - would be a nice mod
my personal opinion is it stresses my eyes a bit - can't tell exactly why - maybe it is just because I am not used to it

@Nystul
Ha, go figure. For me its like a difference between walking through thick deep mud and ice skating. :lol:

I just thought that it would be neat thing to be added as a choice MOD....there`s a lot to read in Daggerfall :)

From next builds it will be possible to mod SDF fonts by replacing files. I have prepared an SDF version of the OpenDyslexic3-Regular.ttf font and attached here for you. Some examples follow.

Something to note is that Daggerfall Unity scales glyphs into the area that would have been occupied by the classic glyph. Unless the fonts have similar aspect ratios for each character, they can end up looking stretched or squished. This is unfortunately necessary to maintain hard-coded text formatting in classic UIs. My concern is this will break the visual standards intended by the OpenDyslexic font.

Anyway, this is how Daggerfall Unity looks with OpenDyslexic font in action. Hopefully it provides you with some help in next builds. :)

To give you a better idea of how this looks in game, attached zip is a 4K screenshot in lossless PNG format. I feel it looks much better in action than it does in the embedded forum images above.

I dont know what to say man. Didn't expect to be added that fast, just tought it would be introduced in some of the MODs by someone else. Thank you very much Gav ;).

PS - yeah scaling is a bit stretched, but as I can tell, it still reads better than standard text, so thats good ;)

This is open SDF right, in theory I could modify it and give you that version right? Maybe I could re-stretch the space in between letters, could that help to keep it standardized?

I would just need some example of the font you use that fits DF scaling, so I can match them.
