That other Jay H's quest thoughts

Post by jayhova »

Since installing Daggerfall Unity I have mostly been playing with a sort of enhanced vanilla experience. I've installed graphics upgrades but haven't really changed the play other than persistent dungeons. As such I am playing with strictly vanilla quests and have noticed some weaknesses in them. About half the time I take a duel quest the duelist never spawns. I go to the inn and wait and nothing. I never get the there are enemies nearby message. Maybe I am doing something wrong and the quest expects me to talk to someone or something.

But I digress. I wanted to talk about a couple of what I will call immersion breakers. Certain NPCs should not be giving certain quests. The last time I got challenged to a duel it was by the young bus boy standing in the inn. It's a tiny bit immersion breaking for this boy to be challenging my steel clad murder-knight to a duel. The other immersion breaker I have run into is unique quests that repeat. The particular one I ran into was the mummy's finger quest where you receive the finger of a mummy and then must journey to a huge dungeon and find the mummy and slay him. It was a very long quest. Imagine my chagrin when I got handed the same bloody finger and told to go to the same dungeon to kill the same mummy. While I am pretty much okay with repeating quests that are the same quest with new people, the same exact quest is another story.

Getting quests from children is mostly an anomaly. In classic, non-guild quests almost exclusively came from innkeepers and merchants. You could very rarely find a normal taverngoer who would offer one, but it would be like a 1/20 chance. In DFU I can go into a tavern and get offered 3 quests by the first 3 people I talk to. Likely something to be reduced over time.

Quest packs have the option of making any given quest only happen once, which I've been using for some of my more dramatic ones. That functionality has been passed on to DFU's classic quests, so it's possible for them to be single-use only. I'm going to guess that would be mod territory exclusively though, since what you describe is still classic behavior.

As far as unique quests go I really think it qualifies as a QOL upgrade over classic. I'm pretty sure that the chances of it happening are slim but it does happen. I was really hoping this would be one of those things that could go into the enhancements tab. To be clear I'm not asking that all quests be made non repeatable just unique ones. I don't mind getting the occasional duel challenge or rescue my fiance. However, I only really want to meet my hated rival once who teleports me to a dungeon or receive the cursed mummy finger. These quests are good because they are a little bit unexpected. But when they repeat they are frustrating.

For my there are a few immersion breakers that I would like to see fixed. Things like escort portraits not at all matching the person you are escorting, certain people giving you quests that are inappropriate for them to give, etc. That's just my feeling.
