Custom Book Support?

Post by Zarrgon66 »

Would it be possible in the future for players to submit stories for in-game books? I thought a great mechanic for a game like Daggerfall would be the ability to publish dime novels and story papers and could lead to some interesting quest and NPC mods, like hows this one for a scenario? you read a sensationalist piece of pulp fiction about some flashy, larger than life masked adventurer, you seek them out to see if they're the real deal, you go to their home town [and their base of operations]but you see multiple versions of the adventurer running about the place. It turns out that the masked adventurer is complete work of fiction created for the publisher and claimed the stories where real to boost sales and thought since magic is a proven fact and the town being on the frontier, people wouldn't suspect otherwise, but real adventurers started going around claiming to be the character. so now the town is holding an adventurer tournament to crown a "real masked adventurer", sort of like what happened in real life with the pulp adventure character Deadwood Dick.

TheLacus has recently added experimental support for custom books. This will be available from next round of builds.

I'm splitting this out to its own topic as it's about a different subject to Ted's sticky.

If you don't mind it being a piece of paper instead of a book, that can all be done with the quest system right now. I could write that quest in a day.

If it had to be a book someone would have to add it to the item index specifically, to ensure the quest system offers it each time. After that it would be pretty standard fare for a quest.

really? what if it's something like a newspaper, would that be easy to add in via the quest system?

Something like Oblivion's Black Horse Courier would be awesome. It could really help flesh out main quest characters and various things happening in the bay.

true but what I always found odd and bit of a missed opportunity about a newspaper existing in that game was A] everyone could read it despite no education system or schools [outside of the guild colleges] and B] despite having invented the large printing press, no one thinks that they could make bank by printing material meant for entertainment and C] no raises the concern that if a news outlet could spread misinformation about locations and public figure, for example, when mass print media started in the 17th century Captain Morgan [yes the guy on the rum] had to go to court to stop a writer with a grudge from destroying his reputation, and even after doing so historians still found the book and ruined it anyway, what's stopping a guy similar grudge bearer from doing the same to the player?
