Winter at Totambu, but green plants

Post by haloterm »

I am currently in the Totambu region, in the beginning of a new year. I wonder if its correct that the plants are green but there is still snow on the ground and the lake is frozen?

Yes this is a "feature" ... its a jungle climate. Everything there has a winter variant (buildings, city walls, terrain textures) but the nature sprites do not.

If someone can make it work, I think I can create the winter sprites. Or Jman0war can do it better than me, if he has time.

By the way, if I read the maps right it's inside Rainforest climate zone, and according to weather tables it never snows under that climate (nor in Subtropical and Desert/Desert 2 climates); So logically things could be frozen but not snow covered?

There are only 4 terrain texture sets and the only one without a snow variant is desert.

Rainforest uses the swamp set which is why the ground has snow. I suppose DFU could use a more refined approach where it looks at the nature flat set used for a subclimate, if that doesnt have a snow version, the terrain should be snowless too.

Some time ago, I added WeatherManager.IsSnowFreeClimate that could be used for that... somewhere

Looks good and should be sufficient since those climates are derived from the base climates and the nature sets used.

I cant search the code right now but I suppose its not being used in DFUs terrain classes yet?

That will NOT work - I had the same idea and than realized its wrong. I even made a snow-less terrain textures just to realize its not looking proper?

Why?

Because as Ive written above, the city buildings and city walls are covered with snow as well.

That is a proof to me, that this climate should have nature flats covered in snow as well.

Terrain texures covered in snow? - Check
City buildings and city walls covered in snow? - Check
Terrain flats covered in snow? - Not

So I guess this makes it more clear on what part of the 3 is different than the rest.

My opinion ofc

It will work fine if the check for snowless climate is extended to city buildings and walls, the building textures are limited to the four base climates: Swamp, Mountain, Desert and Temperate. The subclimates only exist because of the nature sets so the check should be run against the subclimate instead of the base climates, that's all.

What I try to say is, that in my opinion this part of the game should be covere with snow, because 3/4 of this part is already covered with snow as default by the Bethesda decission.
