The Daggerfall Roleplayer Generator

Post by Jay_H »

Hi everyone, I've been trying something new with Daggerfall that's sort of given me a new start on playing it. It's heavily inspired by Veriax's Ironman Morrowind Adventures, so it follows a lot of the same rules.

The idea is to start with a spreadsheet like this. You use a random number generator (like these dice) to roll what's going to happen with your character; first the race, then the class (no custom classes), then their mission in life, then the region they're starting in, and finally what location they start at.

Your character only gets one life, and once dead, you must start a new character. There aren't any other rules except for no abusing obvious glitches or exploits (bank loans) and no reloading to get a better outcome on things like combat and loot.

My first character was an ill-fated Redguard Acrobat who wanted a daedric artifact, but died during an innkeeper's assassination mission at level 2. My second is a Wood Elf Mage who's looking for the Mehrunes Razor... No guarantees how far I'll get.

A lot of the fun is writing the story in my mind and fitting their personality to their goals :D

Nice idea! We did something similar with small one-shot DND campaigns way back. One roll on the stats, keep what you get and stick to it, role-play high and low stats to the hilt.

It made for some great adventures, and I learned that playing around a big disadvantage could be more fun than being powerful. I don't see enough games expand on this. Fallout 2 pulled it off amazingly (e.g. a low-INT character was basically playing a whole other game).

I love stuff like this, great idea. I think the following would be good goals to add:

1. Become head of mages guild

2. Become head of fighters guild

3. Become head of knightly order

4. Become head of Dark Brotherhood

5. Become head of thieve's guild

6. Acquire Lycanthropy

7. Acquire Vamprisim

Also could add which temple the character should join and god to worship:

1. None / Agnostic

2. Akatosh

3. Arkay

4. Dibella

5. Julianos

6. Kynareth

7. Mara

8. Stendarr

9. Z'en

Your earliest memories are of being hungry, cold and
alone. You never were able to find out who your parents
were, or how you came to be left to survive by yourself
in the city streets. You can recall only a few mental
scenes from your childhood. One of the more vivid ones
were finding a bag filled with gold on a corpse in
an alley. Much of your childhood was a daily struggle
simply to stay alive, and retain your few possessions,
and you can remember distinctly the time when
you realized you had a great destiny ahead of you.
As you got older, only a few people were able to
penetrate the shell that was forming around your
friendlier inclinations. The most significant of them
was Laresandra Riverdale, who had just been accepted
to the city guards. At first, Laresandra Riverdale
would bring you food and provide some weapons practice
and advice for you, but eventually she sponsored your
petition for acceptance to a novice warriors' school,
and provided a portion of the gold required as payment.
Then, after your training was complete, she was able to
get you a job as a guard for one of the many merchants'
caravans that criss-crossed Tamriel's roads and
provinces.

Over the next two years, you rented yourself to a
succession of these caravans, learning much of Tamriel
and its inhabitants. You also polished your
hatchet weaponry skills with some actual fighting
experiences in the rougher and more unsettled portions
of the continent. You found it easy to transfer your
early self-defensive inclinations to the caravan as a
whole. Finally though, you decided to return to your
home city and seek out your friend Tabinah Sailon.
You discovered, however, that she had likewise
progressed quickly, and had been invited to the Imperial
City to join a troop of the Imperial Guards. The trip
to the capital drained your funds, so you immediately
took a job there, working evenings at maintaining order
in one of the rowdier inns.

You made friends with all the regulars in the inn, but
your sympathy was won by a nervous, mute boy who kept
the bar stocked. He seemed so frightened and alone that
he reminded you of your own lonely childhood. When one
of the drunken regulars stuck the boy, you leapt to his
defense. The boy looked at you with such gratitude that
your heart almost broke. Then, a few days later, he
disappeared.

Months later, while you were helping restock the cellar,
you were called to the front door, and there was the boy
again. This time he was dressed in Imperial robes and
surrounded by escorts including Tabinah Sailon.
The "mute" boy spoke in an unmistakably aristocratic
voice, "My name is Prince Pelagius, son of the
true Emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim VII. When I was
in hiding, fleeing from the wrath of the usurper Jagar
Tharn, you befriended me and saved my life. Please
accept the greatest gift the Emperor can bestow, his
gratitude."

He also presented you with a summons from the Emperor
himself, who apparently had need of a champion such as
you. Perhaps your luck was finally beginning to change.

I had considered choosing specific guilds to rank in, but Daggerfall's guild system feels pretty obtuse unless a character already has high skills for it. If I rolled a Barbarian who needed to become the master of the Mages Guild I could probably do it, but it would take a long time to gain the skills necessary. Lycanthropy and vampirism are things I'll add in right way though, thanks :)

Just as good!

I like it.
Could add a name generator too.

That's true. I've been doing it from scratch using the UESP name pages. I can't find a name generator online that uses pre-Morrowind naming conventions.

A Pre-MW name generator for TES?
Doubtful, but it would be neat to see someone make one.

http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/namegenerator is ok though.

For fun, I've decided to add a "special condition" column with one specific handicap. So far I've only been able to think of a few things, which are banning one spell school; requiring only one- or two-handed weapons; banning Spellmaker; banning item repair; and having a negative legal reputation. I dunno how it'll contribute but I figure why not :D

Now that you mention this, there's a name generator in DFTFU that uses Daggerfall's own namebank data. If it wasn't missing a couple of races, I would have put a "random name" button into the character creator. Races with available name tables data are:
  • Breton
  • Redguard
  • Nord
  • Imperial
  • Dark Elf
  • High Elf
  • Wood Elf
Argonians and Khajiit are out of luck. :(
