[0.14.5] Side Quest Dungeons Rendering Unconnected Areas

Post by isilven »

When doing a random quest for an innkeeper (clear out a property of harpies, return with a feather from their leader), I was having a hell of a time trying to find the harpy in question and Tele2QMarker wasn't helping. I decided to void range (levitation on + teleport against a wall) to see if I could find her. Lo and behold, there was a number of rooms and tunnels that did not actually connect to anything: their doors went to the void, and she had spawned in one of those areas.

This is sort of true, but not quite :)

The quest is The Harpies' Nest. The harpies that are needed for the quest spawn around you, so by going into the disconnected blocks, you made the enemy spawn in an unreachable location. The enemy is not normally placed there.

The blocks you're looking at are called border blocks. They're a necessary part of fitting Daggerfall's dungeons together. You can find some useful info on what border blocks are and why they exist in these links:

Jay has all the right info above. The border blocks look weird when you peek behind the scenes, but they're a perfectly normal part of how Daggerfall dungeons are assembled.

There are two types of enemy spawns in quests. The first type is placed to a quest marker somewhere in dungeon. The second type spawn near player based on a timer and chance roll. The harpy quest is one of the second variety, and it has a rather slow timer and low chance. The best strategy is to rest until a harpy spawns nearby.
