New Unity runtime cost policy

Post by jimfcarroll »

I've been hearing about this new Unity policy where they're going to start charging developers $0.20 per-install, which they're monitoring directly. I was curious how/if this is going to affect DFU, my favorite unity project.

For anyone concerned, the Unity pricing change is aimed at developers using their engine. There's a revenue threshold above 200k. It doesn't apply to a free open source game project like DFU that made $0 lifetime from any source.

On a positive note, the upcoming release is 0.16 Release Candidate. I'll be calling 1.0 in the next week or so. It's disappointing all this Unity nonsense happened around the same time. I feel like it diminishes what should have been a celebratory milestone. But that milestone is happening regardless. :)

Thanks for clearing this up Interkarma,

as I was also a bit concerned when Ive heard about the Unity changes. Good to know DFU is safe.

Man, DFU 1.0 in a weeks timeline? Im not sure Im mentally ready for that  Its been 7 years on this project for me..
Wrapping things up in a DREAM to be able to follow up DFU 1.0 with the DREAM 2023...

Dont worry, Unity changes do not diminish anything in regards to DFU. I still cant believe its about to happen. :ugeek:
I wonder, if the press will cover the release, but I believe it will surprise us. Because they covered the beta in the past quite a lot. So final release will most likely be discussed even more. Every additional week after Starfield release is good for DFU release...

Time will tell..

... unless, of course, Unity just committed suicide by this move. Then it will eventually have an effect.

I dont see it having effect on DFU. It might have effect on the new projects, as the development of engine might HALT, but we are on 2019 version anyway and that version is gonna stay.

I will definitely be streaming Daggerfall Unity 1.0 on GOG when it drops, so I will give it as much exposure as I can!

I will also do my best to promote 1.0, drama be damned.

In a twisted way, the unity drama may help DFU get more attention.
For example people searching about unity.
