Re: Modern Interface
I like the inventory menu from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl:
https://imgur.com/a/5qtFC
The inventory is in the form of a grid and displays total carry weight in the upper corner, left click on an item to equip or use it, right click on it and a tooltip will appear, showing options like "description", "drop", etc.
The character doll is still there, and also shows some of the caracter's defensive stats, along with his gold and total health and magicka. If you are looting, the chest (or dead body) inventory will appear instead of the character doll.
Some improvements can also be made to it, like drag-and-drop inventory sorting, simply hovering the mouse on an item to get its description, and right clicking it to drop it.

Re: Modern Interface
how about an info textbox that is always there and holds the detail info. Mouse-over on item would immediately show the info in this box. I know one would have to make some free space for this
but waiting even only 1 sec for a mouse-over tooltip can be tedious when looking at many items in a list...
but this of course will differ from vanilla daggerfall a bit

It's actually a good idea, Nystul! And it doesn't even have to sit empty, it can dispaly player stats, for example, or some other information while you are not looking at the items. Maybe your current location, a calendar and an active quest with its due date. Something useful. While on mouseover it would show detailed item description.how about an info textbox that is always there and holds the detail info
Still, we'll have to test it first, but I can see it working rather well!

That's what I suggested beforeNystul wrote:how about an info textbox that is always there and holds the detail info.

An info box would be perfect. You're a genius, Nystul.

I think the SkyUI mod for Skyrim would be a good model to follow.

Re: Modern Interface
It's a huge mess? If you like it, use it, no problem there. And I must admit, in terms of style, it has some nice details to it, I like the feel of it. But it's really not user friendly and cumbersome. What's wrong with the UI in Daggerfall ?
When looking at container/inventory menu, you can't see more than a couple items at the time, you have to click on buttons to switch between modes, it's just poorly designed overall. Thankfully, we've come a long way in interfaces for games and apps since Daggefall's release, and we now know what works and what doesn't, but Daggerfall's UI was never a big strength of the game, even at the time.

@NakitaTheTanner
I absolutely love the enhancements in DU to the UI.
Whoever did it needs a lifetime supply of free mead.
That's all I'm gonna say...
