Just a point about the basic house purchase system that you may not know, a player can only have one house in each region. Hope that is fine.

Yes, I know about that. I’m trying to devise a way to circumvent this limitation, if I succeed I’ll add it in the next update.

In the original Daggerfall, it was one house, period. Does DFU allow for multiple houses, so long as each is in a different region?

Precisely. Even if I have to admit I don’t remember these details regarding vanilla. Never got to the point of having enough money to buy a house, let alone more than one.

Getting a house wasn't too hard if you got to higher levels and would break into stores at night (or loiter in them) and clear them out of high end gear (Orcish/Ebony/Daedric) and sold it. Still possible in DFU (except for the loitering until the shop closes).
There's a Fighter's Guild quest (Giant Killing) that can sometimes give you +15 Reputation with The Merchants (you'll have to escort a merchant found near the Giant, but the merchant only has a 33% chance to spawn upon accepting the quest). This improves your buying/selling prices with all store merchants, which lets you rack up more gold.
Edit: Merchants Reputation is currently bugged. It increases prices you sell stuff for, but also increases the prices of stuff you buy.

For sure, there’s plenty of ways to gather enough gold to buy a house. It is possible to visit a few region taking loans of hundreds of GPS, and this requires no effort whatsoever.

But if anyone wants to “role play” getting that gold? That’s usually another matter.

Yeah, there's some real gold sinks too. Big houses can be over 1,000,000 Gold (those tend to be duplexes though, which i don't like). Large Ships are 200,000 Gold. Daedric equipment is usually 10k+ Gold (Weapons) to 100k+ Gold (Armor), which can be made cheaper with Mercantile skill. Daedric Summonings are 200k Gold, which can be brought down to 100k by getting 100 Reputation with the particular Witches Coven (do 20 quests for them, i usually spam the Public Relation quest). You can get a lot of gold from monsters at high levels, but can still only carry so much actual gold at a time (you'll leave behind far more gold in a dungeon than you pick up).

Edit: Wow, i just noticed the The Merchants reputation is actually having an opposite effect to what it should. My Argonian with 100 Personality/25 Mercantile/0 Merchants reputation is getting much better buying prices than my Nord with 100 Personality/25 Mercantile/100 Merchants reputation. That's definitely a bug.
Edit 2: Weird. It appears that The Merchants reputation is favorably benefiting sell prices, but is negatively impacting buy prices. I just did a direct Apples to Apples comparison between the two characters. Both characters had 100 Personality/100 Luck/100 Mercantile. When selling New quality Daedric Boots at the exact same Armorer, the Argonian with 0 Merchants reputation was selling it for 54,554 Gold, while the Nord with 100 Merchants reputation was selling it for 61,947. However, when buying a Horse from the exact same General Store, the Argonian was paying 1,692 Gold, while the Nord was paying 1,921 Gold...
