What does the letter in Nocturnal's Quest do?

Reading it lead me to another dungeon with nothing inside. Also why doesn't this quest end after receiving the Skeleton Key? It seems to end some time after that. Is there some reason for that?

The offer to betray Nocturnal leads to nothing, as shown in the walkthrough. You'll lose out on both artifacts if you attempt it.

Some quests have a short delay before they finally end. They will do you no harm.

There seems to be a way to obtain both artifacts by first agree to let him go, kill him in the second dungeon, get the artifact in the third dungeon and get the Skeleton Key as the reward. The only downside to this path seems to be the 20 reputation penalty with Nocturnal. Is this route added by DFU?

No, we've never added anything like that. I'll have to check what the scripting looks like, since it's not supposed to happen.
