daggerfallunity.net

Post by XJDHDR »

I received two emails earlier today telling me about replies to threads on this forum. The first was from an email address on the dfworkshop.net domain, as it should. The second, sent around an hour later, came from a different address at the daggerfallunity.net domain. There is a web server as well, but it just has an "under construction" page, and it's SSL certificate isn't correctly configured.

Interkarma, do you have anything to share about this?

It may just be leftover from an older web setup Interkarma had going. I went to daggerfallunity.net and got redirected to the dfworkshop.net domain, just the http or www. version I think because the SSL was invalid like you said. Its probably not a wildcard certificate so only valid for certain domains

It's doing so now, but it wasn't this afternoon. As I said, it was an "under construction" page when I looked.

I checked archive.org, it's been doing that redirect since 2018: https://web.archive.org/web/20180701000 ... lunity.net. It's possible you happened to access the server while some maintenance was going on, preventing the redirect from triggering.

Since I'm at my PC now and don't have to deal with a phone browser :) : This domain has been registered since 2015 at GoDaddy. I'll take a wild guess that Interkarma or someone else initially owned the domain but dropped it to avoid dealing with Bethesda legal teams because the name Daggerfall is in it.

Depending on how the mailing system has been configured on this site / forum, I can easily see you getting an e-mail from that second domain through some left-over credentials that are still valid.

My main point is, I don't think it's any cause for concern, it should be easy to fix with a change in the server's configuration.

It's still a good thing you brought it up though, I imagine other people have gotten these in their spambox and just ignored them.

I'll admit that I didn't think of checking the domain's history. I think it's safe to say that Interkarma is the current owner.

I'm not so sure about this. I'm not sure how phpBB's backend works, but I doubt the email used to send notifications would change without someone actively making that change.

I wasn't concerned about this. Just curious.

I know, I'm not arguing with you. Just trying to clarify things as far as I can. I worked in web development for 15 years, I've seen stranger things than this :)

I don't think Interkarma owns the domain currently as my WHOIS query showed it as for sale, it seems to reside with one of those companies that snatch up domain names as they are released from ownership.

As far as the backend side of things goes, all it takes is someone to reactivate the server / mail service that sent out that e-mail through daggerfallunity.net. It's possible it's been dormant for years and that any attempts trying to send an e-mail through that domain were failing consistently but it was never fixed because the mail that was meant to be sent out through dfworkshop.net worked without issue.

I recently changed the sending address of forum backend after a report the @dfworkshop.net forum activation emails were not arriving. I'll likely change this back at some point.

These are my domains and have been for many years.

BTW, this isn't correct Burt. What you're seeing is domain privacy at work, not a holding company. And the domain is most certainly not for sale - this is something registrars have started doing to try and profit from domains they don't even own. They will offer to sell the domain then ask you to pay a "holding amount" to register interest. Then if domain comes up for sale, they'll scoop it up and sell it to you. Domain name registration is full of scammy behaviour like this.

I recommend using mxtoolbox.com for your WHOIS lookups in future. It's purely functional with none of the nonsense.

Thanks for the clarification. Privacy definitely did its job, there was nothing remotely pointing to you. I left IT for good so I dont need to do these queries anymore, guess the rust is already settling into my skills, nice :D
