Problem with pacifying

Problem with pacifying

Hey!
Im running into a problem more and more the stronger my language skills get.
I pacify enemy A or group of A's
B spawns and attacks A. If I then pacify B during or before the fight all the A's will turn against me.
This cant be controlled and ruins a lot of the linguist gameplay. Is this a feature or a bug?

Hey Vondur! :)

The author of enemy infighting (Allofich) hasn't been around for years, and the feature is old enough that even I don't have a good enough mental map of the code to give you a sufficient answer off the top of my head. Someone would have to review the code to give you details.

Enemy infighting is working well enough for what the author intended it to do. You're just using it in a way the author never anticipated or designed for and finding edge cases in the system. You might consider that a bug and others might not.

BTW, the full saying is: "it's not a bug, it's a feature". It's actually a quippy response rooted in the the ambiguity of engineering. One person's bug is another person's feature, and vice versa. Wired has a good short read about the origin of the phrase.

I just saw the episode of Mad Genius where this happened and I fear that it's time to burst Tristane's bubble about starting a cult. Pacification does not turn enemies to friendlies: it makes them neutral (they no longer perceive you as a threat). You can confirm this with the Enhanced Info feature of The Penwick Papers mod.

So, here's what happened to you during the let's play: you pacified two entities that are enemies of each other (e.g. an Orc and a human); you attacked the Orc that you pacified; all of the humans that you already pacified turned against you after the Orc was killed.

Now, consider the situation from the perspective of the humans you pacified: they saw you pacify an Orc and then they saw you stab the Orc in the back. Therefore, they reached the conclusion that Tristane cannot be trusted and became hostile again. They're smarter than you think. :mrgreen:
