More Quests from the Merchants

Post by nicksta1310 »

I counted the available quests on my current installation, which includes a handful of quest pack mods. I discovered that the Merchants pool was very small for a faction that has frequent contact with the player, which can result in highly repetitive quest offers.

Would someone please make a quest pack for shopkeepers and tavernkeepers? I'm tired of being asked to impersonate a lover for a duel every other day.

Here's an idea to start with: a shopkeeper's employee is unwell and you are hired to fill in for the day.

Though I support the idea, I must mention that merchants have more quests in vanilla than any other faction. This list is accurate enough to show how many they can offer: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Que ... Innkeepers

With that out of the way, certainly, I'd welcome more :)

Can you even narrow the commoner quest givers down to just shopkeepers or innkeepers... I thought they give the same quests that all commoner quest givers give, of whatever faction. Adding a merchant specific quest might look a bit odd coming from a fighters guild member, a prostitute or a bard for example... but then, that can probably be said for a number of the existing quests as well... and for my quest packs... so, who am I to talk?
Anyway ... more quests, for whatever group, can only be good in my book.

That UESP page is showing a combined list of Merchants and Commoners quests. It also states that shopkeepers/tavernkeepers can offer any of those quests. In my experience, DFU does not behave like that: I only remember receiving quest offers on the Merchants list from those NPCs. It could be an unintended effect of a mod, though.

That is actually an interesting point, one I hadn't noticed before. I'm not sure how much it matters, but they do have two different questgiver groups in the questlist table:
-- Commoners
A0C00Y00, Commoners, N, 0, 0, Passed
-A0C00Y04, Commoners, N, 0, 0, BROKEN. QRC file is missing in DF+DFQFIX. Duplicate of a0c0xy04.
A0C00Y06, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y07, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y08, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y10, Commoners, N, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y11, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y12, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y14, Commoners, N, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y15, Commoners, N, 0, 0, Passed
A0C00Y16, Commoners, M, 0, 0, enabled for testing
A0C00Y17, Commoners, M, 0, 0, Passed
A0C01Y01, Commoners, N, 0, 1, Passed
A0C01Y03, Commoners, M, 0, 1, Passed
A0C01Y06, Commoners, M, 0, 1, Passed
A0C01Y09, Commoners, N, 0, 1, Passed
A0C01Y13, Commoners, M, 0, 1, Passed
A0C0XY04, Commoners, M, 0, X, Passed
A0C10Y02, Commoners, N, 1, 0, Passed
A0C10Y05, Commoners, M, 1, 0, Passed
A0C41Y18, Commoners, M, 4, 1, Passed

-- Merchants
K0C00Y00, Merchants, M, 0, 0, Passed
K0C00Y02, Merchants, N, 0, 0, Passed
K0C00Y03, Merchants, M, 0, 0, Passed

Well, there you go. Now that I know there are such things as merchant specific quests I might try think up a few to add to the limited number already available. They'll have to be ones that don't look odd coming from either a shop keeper or an inn keeper presumably... sourcing and setting them up with suppliers perhaps... setting up rivals to take a fall... taking out black-marketeers impinging on their business... helping them with their own black-market endeavors... tracking down a particularly prolific shop-lifter... helping them bribe officials... helping them clear the premises of vermin.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I saw a "let's play" video of the DOS version that showed a quest from the Commoners list being offered by a merchant, so it seems that those quests are supposed to be available too. I have never seen a merchant in DFU offer those quests, so there may be a deviation from classic behaviour here. In the meantime, I'm going to add those quests to the Merchants pool in my copy of questlist-classic, excluding the quests that would cause the merchant to leave the shop.

Again, this could be an unintended effect of a mod I'm using. I haven't tested the merchants in vanilla DFU.
