Region Reputation - Should be a way to recover it

Post by SenTerran »

Never played Daggerfall before DFU 1.0, so I didn't know anything. At the start of the game, I used Charm on townspeople because I thought it was a social buff and didn't know it was a crime. And I did that a lot because I thought I needed to do that to train up magic. I'm playing a nightblade thief so I thought the soldiers hated me for stealing a lot successfully. So I'm a villain in Daggerfall, and I read that it would take time to dissipate... which hasn't happened after hours and hours, I think I'm at the end of the game at this point.

Then I start researching how to remedy it. Surrendering does nothing. Seems every form of mission region reputation remediation was disabled in DFU 1.0 (which is fair as they seemed more like bugged missions), and reputation equalization takes 1 point for 113 days and would erase most positive reputations I've built which sounds like the complete inverse of fun.

This is more about Daggerfall itself, the crime system seems not very well thought out. I feel like a stint in prison and paying a fine should reduce my negative reputation (maybe to the minimum of Scoundrel) but it seems entirely pointless. And/or there should be a form of grind to recover this, aka still work and doesn't feel like direct value manipulation...

In the meantime, I'm that bastard who cast Charm on an unsuspecting world and deserves to be hated forever.

Maybe a bug report - I have no idea if this is a bug. A couple of times in a Daggerfall city where I am a villain, there is a chance that suddenly the game starts lagging and spawns in dozens and dozens of guards. I'm guessing I ended up with 150+ guards. I had to evade and run out of town. I didn't hate it as I am a wanted figure, but just in case that's a bug. That's happened about twice.

I don't know, the system feels generally logical to me. In real life, society for the most part does not treat convicted criminals with the same amount of trust as those without dents in legal reputation, even after they've been through with jail time. Repeated offenders get even less trust both from the authorities and from anyone who knows about their doings. I do agree though that the game is not well designed for people who would want to play out a law-breaking character, at least without dedicated mods that is.

On the other hand, while you're absent from the province, your reputation should slowly normalize as people generally "forget" about you and what you did. Of course it takes a lot of time.

To fix your bad rep, you should farm for the mix-up random quest where you're framed for theft of a valuable item. Solve the quest and you should have your legal reputation restored or even boosted up a bit. Have fun!

A Mix-Up is disabled on default DFU games, because it's unfair and inexplicably punishing. There's an escort quest that can boost your legal reputation if you hand over your ward to the city watch, or you can install Quest Pack 1 and the Knightly Order quests it contains will boost your legal reputation.

If a user really wants to enable A Mix-Up, they can enter /DaggerfallUnity_Data/StreamingAssets/Tables/QuestList-Classic.txt and change the following line

Code: Select all

-K0C00Y06, Merchants, M, 0, 0, disabled
to
